"The perfect picture comes with practice...and a few foolproof shortcuts" by Caroline D’Cruz
Face away
For the right look every time, “keep it light‚” says hair and make-up artist Anand Kaira, Delhi. “If you’re out during the day, use basic tinted lip gloss, kohl and eyeliner or mascara for the eyes and tissue to absorb excess oil and sweat if it gets too hot,” he says. “Doing up the eyes really works for the camera,” says Rohan Shrestha, Mumbai-based celebrity photographer. “The eyes do a lot of talking in pictures.”
A word of caution though: “Never put on dark eye make-up for a picture that is being clicked from afar,”says Anushka Nadia Menon, Delhi-based fashion photographer. It will look like you got punched and have a black eye.
For the evening, Kaira suggests highlighting either the eyes or the lips. “It has to be either one, or you will look OTT. Use a red or an orange lipstick for a pop of colour,”he adds. TRY Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined Gel Eyeliner (`1,540) and (3) Chambor Smoky Eyes Intense Kohl (`595) for eyes. Go sheer with (6) M·A·C Moody Blooms Sheen Supreme Lipglass Tint (`1,450) for your pout.
For a slimming efect, Kaira suggests contouring and highlighting, especially if you have a chubby face. Slimmer faces do not need contouring, just a slight blush, to bring out the cheeks. “Depending on the time of the day, a shimmer blush (night) or a matte cream blush (day) will work,” he says. “The aim is always to achieve an oval face shape, so tackle the areas that should recede into the background (problem areas) with a darker foundation or bronzer,” says Ashima Kapoor, Delhi-based make-up artist and hair stylist.
She suggests brushing the tip of the chin, the bridge of your nose and the centre of your forehead with a highlighter, where as the hollows of your cheeks need to be darkened with bronzer to add definition. TRY Inglot Sparkling Dust #01 (`1,150) or (1) Revlon Highlighting Pallete (`550) to highlight and (7) Victoria’s Secret Baked Mineral Bronzing Powder (`2,190).
Hair day
A clean look wins for the day and a bit of extravagance works best for the night. “Hair should have texture, it shouldn’t fall flat, or there will be no life in the photo,” says Anand Gogoi, Delhi-based photographer.
Loose braids and ponytails usually work with broad or round faces. For the evening, soft waves and curls add glamour. “Shorter hair towards the front of your face (outlining the shape) gives the illusion of a slimmer face. Straight hair in layers works best for broad faces. The layers should start from your cheeks, so they cut your face and add definition,” says Kapoor. If you’re short, try adding volume to your crown. The volume atop your head gives the illusion of height. Kapoor suggests backcombing with a tail comb. “With the pointed end of the comb, create one-inch-thick sections horizontally and backcomb each section. Start from the hairline and work your way backwards. Then, use a brush to smooth the front section and pin all the hair to the back of your head. If your hair lacks volume, you can help it with foam buns to pad up the crown area,” adds Kapoor. TRY (2) Sebastian Professional Re-Shaper (`1,300), a hairspray with humidity resistance and a multi-blend hold that adds movement and retains shape.
Body love
“When your body is patchy in pictures (it is more visible in a high-resolution camera than it is in a phone camera), it can look the worst, so you have to moisturise and conceal all the patches to make your skin look even,” says Menon.
“Use a concealer that is closest to your skin colour and make sure you blend well,” says Mumbai-based make-up artist Savleen Kaur Khurana. “To add glow and for a toned look, dust bronzer all over your body and always moisturise before you start applying make-up. Contour your body: simply stand under a light source and you will see where the natural shadows fall on your body.
Then use a bronzer on the shadows and blend well,” she adds. TRY (4 ) Bottega Di Lungavita Linfa-Age Toning and Firming Body Butter (`1,550) to moisturise, Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Flawless Wear Concealer, (`1,650) to conceal and (5) The Body Shop’s Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder (`1,395) for a toned efect.
